Those calls for unity didn't last very long. Garth Brooks' performance at the presidential inaugural is causing a firestorm among some of the more conservative members of his fanbase.
Aware of the potential backlash, the country music superstar had attempted to clarify why he was performing during a virtual press conference days before the event.
“This is a great day in our household," Brooks said earlier this week. “This is not a political statement. This is a statement of unity.”

Unexpected Moments from Biden's Inauguration Day That Made a Big Statement
But many of his fans didn't get the distinction. The singer's Facebook page has been inundated since his performance.
"I absolutely CANNOT believe you performed at the inauguration. You have been my Country Music inspiration, until I heard this today. You made a grave mistake in the eyes of your fan base. I won’t be 'looking back on THE DANCE', you failed your base... goodbye" wrote one person.
"You just pi---- off the wrong half of America the ones that supported you from the beginning Good Bye!" wrote another fan.
"Garth I really thought you had a lot of class but seriously declined Trumps inauguration but played at Obama’s international and now playing at Biden’s inauguration. WOW GARTH REALLY. If it wasn’t a political statement then you should’ve turned down Biden inauguration. WOW!" wrote another.
Yet another added, "Cannot even believe you are performing at the inauguration after saying you are not taking a political stance. Friends in Low Places indeed!!"
And if his performance alone wasn't enough to rile up those extreme fans, Brooks was also spotted cordially shaking hands with President Joe Biden, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris in addition to former Vice President Mike Pence. He also embraced former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, as well as former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
Brooks has not publicly commented since his appearance.
