Stephen Dubner / Journalist and Acclaimed Co-Author of “Freakonomics”

On this episode of Drinks W/LX, SuChin Pak sits down with journalist and co-author of Freakonomics Stephen Dubner to discuss Judaism, fatherhood, and creating a cultural phenomenon.

SuChin’s Take:

The most interesting thing about Stephen Dubner isn’t that he had a hand in writing a book that became an instant cultural phenomenon…. it’s his fascinating family history of religion and conversion. After we got through some really cool insights about why we do the things we do, what abortion has to do with the crime rate and how the study of economics can really change every day decisions you make, we got lost in a conversation about his other novel, Choosing My Religion. He told this incredible story about how after growing up the youngest of 8 in a devout Catholic home, he came to find Judaism and how an Arch Bishop in New York had to write a letter to mend the family wounds. After years of strained relations and not speaking to his mother, Stephen discovers that Judaism is actually part of the Catholic Church… you’ll have to watch to hear the whole story. I’ve been telling it at dinner parties ever since, and friends have never been so jealous of my new job here…

Mira Nair / Director of “The Namesake”, “Vanity Fair” and “Monsoon Wedding”

SuChin’s Take:

Firstly, let me say, Jhujmpa Lahiri is one of my favorite authors. The Namesake was the first book I ever read that gave a version of the immigrant experience in America, that seemed true to me. Like when the main character wants to just pack a pb&j sandwich for lunch and not somosas. I was a stinky lunch girl too, only not somosas but of the kimchee and dried fish variety. I dreamed of packing little sandwiches of processed meat snuggled between crust-less pieces of spongy white Wonder Bread… mmmmm. So, the thought of this beloved novel being turned into a film, directed by none other than Mira Nair, well, it just couldn’t be better. The film is amazing, will have you in tears, the good kind. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned about meeting celebrities, especially those in the entertainment industry, is that for some reason, without fail, like a law of science, those that you admire, those people you’re dying to meet, are the most difficult. My rule of thumb has been to avoid meeting artists that you really like because you may not be able to separate your real life encounter with their work. Mira Nair is a role model to anyone who’s been told that their point of view, their casting choices, their subject matter won’t find an audience. Again and again, she’s fought the system, casted non-whites in leads, explored uneasy topics of love, sex, race and class. So let’s just say she’s a woman who knows what she wants, has very little patience for the things she doesn’t want to do and doesn’t mind confrontation. Which always makes for a fun interview.

Casey Johnson / Socialite and Entrepreneur

On this episode of Drinks W/LX, socialite Casey Johnson talks to SuChin about adjusting to life in Los Angeles after having grown up in the heart of New York City (at 1:00), the inspirational trip to Cambodia which ultimately inspired her to adopt a child (2:25), her thoughts on motherhood and raising a child in the spotlight (4:50), and what it’s like transitioning from growing up with abundant wealth to establishing her own business (5:40). Casey also shares the pitfalls of living with such a notorious name (8:20), the lifestyles of her famous friends, Nikki and Paris Hilton (10:35), and the humiliation she felt stemming from the scandal between herself and her aunt, Libet Johnson (12.50)… and of course her optimistic outlook on her future (14:20).

SuChin’s Take:

Well…. I mean what do you really expect me to say about Casey…. the only thing I really wanted to ask her was if she was looking to adopt a little Asian girl, I would be more than happy to change my last name and call it a day. She’s the heir to the Johnson and Johnson brand…I don’t need to fill in the crazy stories, I think everyone else does a better job at that. For me, I think I was really amazed that she was so candid and open and had no problems addressing her personal life, the drama of her family arguments and how she wants to try to do things differently for herself and this family she’s about to have. I don’t hang around that set, so I couldn’t tell you personal stories or encounters with Paris, Nicky or Casey, but I can say that for someone who could’ve just talked about luggage, private planes and make up…she does have ambitions to be something else and truthfully, has regrets and owns up to them. Whether she fails to convince anyone else, well that’s their problem not hers.
